The Ekati and Diavik mines operate under strict environmental laws, permits and agreements related to their impact on land, air, water and wildlife.
To fulfill their commitments, they have environmental monitoring programs and report publicly on their performance.
The knowledge of traditional land users is an integral part of environmental management at the mines. Aboriginal elders and youth are involved in projects to preserve their traditional knowledge for future generations, and they assist with land and wildlife protection.
Throughout the life of each mine, progressive technologies are used to minimize environmental impact. Land restoration begins as soon as an area is no longer needed for mining.
